Living Learning Communities and Themed Living Communities

The University of New England’s First Year Experience Living Learning Communities (LLCs) and Themed Living Communities (TLCs) provide an introductory leadership experience within the context of a residential setting.

Offered to incoming first-year students, you will have the opportunity to move to campus early to participate in an off-campus retreat to develop a sense of community with other LLC/TLC members.

Students interested in an LLC or TLC for Fall 2023 must go through one of the summer orientation sessions in June 2023.

LLC students learn through a cohort style of learning by taking one or more linked courses together throughout the year. TLC students take advantage of theme-specific programming opportunities.

You can expect to:

• Meet new people who share similar interests and goals
• Develop relationships with staff and faculty
• Benefit from one-on-one mentorship
• Participate in programs and workshops based on a common theme
• Explore identities as leaders on campus
• Learn about valuable resources which can assist in the goal of being successful
• Make a positive contribution to the UNE community

If you participate in the LLC or TLC, you reside with other students in a traditional-style residence hall. Each theme will benefit from the involvement of a professional staff advisor, a resident advisor (RA), and a first-year expert, and will occupy its own floor within the residence hall.

These communities are open to specific majors only.

Health Professions Community

Eligible Majors: Pre-Pharmacy; Dental Hygiene; Nursing; Applied Exercise Science; Athletic Training; Health, Wellness, and Occupational Studies; Nutrition; Public Health; or Social Work. 

The Health Professions Living Learning Community is an opportunity for first year students in the Westbrook College of Health Professions to fully explore their chosen career path, develop as leaders in their field and successfully transition to the college environment. Health Professions LLC students will take at least two common courses over the year, receive additional support and mentoring from a collaborative team of faculty and staff, and engage in a variety of experiential learning opportunities. Please note Medical Biology students and other Pre-Medicine majors are not eligible to participate.

Marine Learning Community

Eligible Majors: Marine Sciences, Marine Affairs, or Marine Entrepreneurship

The Marine Living Learning Community is an opportunity for Marine Sciences, Marine Affairs, and Marine Entrepreneurship majors to more fully explore their area of study, develop as leaders, and successfully transition to the college environment. Marine LLC students will take at least two common courses over the year, receive additional support and mentoring from a collaborative team of faculty and staff, and engage in a variety of experiential learning opportunities on the shores of coastal Maine.

These communities are open to students in any major.

Go Global Community

Individuals participating in the Go Global Community are students of the world. UNE strives to empower students in becoming global citizens. Go Global Community members will explore all the world has to offer through self-reflection activities, programs, and cultural experiences, as well as service projects and retreats. Are you potentially interested in traveling abroad? This community is for you.

Lavender Community

The Lavender Community is for students who identify as LGBTQIA+ or as allies of the community. Residents will have the opportunity to develop, foster, and explore identity, get connected to campus and local resources, and participate in specialized programming provided by UNE supports. This is first and foremost a space for LGBTQIA+ identified individuals to feel safe and thrive.

Recreation Nation Community

Residents of the Recreation Nation Community are students who have an interest in any of the various recreational opportunities UNE offers including outdoor recreation, on-campus intramural sports, and club sports. This community is directly connected with staff members in Outdoor Recreation and Club Sports/Intramurals who will introduce students to the many opportunities for recreation at UNE and beyond. These students will have the chance to explore Maine’s beauty, compete for an intramural championship t-shirt, and, simply put, have fun with others who share a common interest.
